ESPN Just Doing ESPN Things (The Fuck Michael Wilbon Blog)

CBSSPORTS - The Oklahoma City Thunder are down 3-2 heading back to Memphis for Game 6 on Thursday night, which is causing a bit of panic and giving some people reason to jump all over what the Thunder have been in this series. The Memphis Grizzlies have made their opponents uncomfortable with a smothering defense that has turned Thunder star Kevin Durant from the heavy favorite for MVP in the regular season to a "struggling" scorer against Tony Allen and the rest of the Grizzlies' defense.

Thursday's edition of The Oklahoman has a big spread inside it in which they've deemed Durant to be "Mr. Unreliable."

Durant has been the main cog in the Thunder's offensive attack in this series, like he has been in almost every game for this franchise in the past seven seasons. He's averaging 28.0 points, 9.8 rebounds, 4.0 assists, 1.1 steals, 1.8 blocks, and 4.0 turnovers in the five games against the Grizzlies. Allen has helped force him into shooting 40.0 percent from the field and 28.6 percent from the 3-point line.

The Thunder star also missed a key free throw in Game 5 that would have tied the game in overtime after Joey Crawford interrupted his free throw routine to yell at the scoreboard operator.

While Durant has been more human than we're used to seeing him, to call him unreliable seems to be a very hot sports take.

UPDATE: Mike Sherman of The Oklahoman issued an apology on the headline used in the newspaper:

"We take great pride in our headlines about big sporting events and news in Oklahoma. Thursday's headline in The Oklahoman on Kevin Durant's performance in the Memphis series missed the mark.

The words were overstated and unduly harsh. The headline and presentation left the impression that we were commenting on Durant's season, career or even character. We were not. We were referring only to the Memphis series.

The fact the headline and presentation left that impression with so many readers is proof that we failed."

That's a great apology and all, but even the apology misses the mark when clarifying it's simply referring to this Memphis series. Unreliable may not mean what he thinks it means.

Yesterday there were 3 separate series in the NBA where teams forced a game 7. That's a pretty big headline. Guess what ESPN was talking about? This stupid (but accurate) headline from some bum-fuck newspaper called The Oklahoman anointing Durant with the title of Mr. Unreliable.

If you've read my blogs (which you probably haven't because this blog is basically an on-going public conversation between me and Bnasty with no one listening) than you would know that I can't stand when people with thin skin get offended over dumb shit. I was like 4 seconds away from throwing the Apple TV remote at Michael Wilbon's face last night because this motherfucker was just going off on The Oklahoman for printing the headline. Who the fuck are you Michael Wilbon? I like KD and the Thunder too, even when Russell Westbrook dresses like he's Kanye and Boy George's illegitimate son. In hindsight though, I wish they would've just lost last night just so Michael Wilbon would've lost all legitimacy and I wouldn't have had to suffer through anymore of his psychotic non-sense

What makes this worse is that obviously Michael Wilbon wasn't the only one put off by the headline. You don't issue an apology of this caliber just for Michael Wilbon. You do it because enough of the general population bitched at you and you feel like you have to apologize for something. Frankly, I'm mad The Oklahoman apologized because what the fuck do they have to apologize for? They called out Durant for playing like shit, because the Thunder are a 2 seed and they were down 3-2 in an opening series where the Durantula had been uncharacteristically quiet. Maybe that's why he balled out last night. Maybe he was sipping a cup of coffee yesterday morning and flipped open the Thursday edition of The Oklahoman, saw the headline and got real pissed off. Maybe it was the kick in the ass he needed. Maybe Thunder fans and Kevin Durant's mom, who tweeted about the headline (Yeah, Kevin Durant's mom has a Twitter), should be thanking The Oklahoman for the tough love because they had the balls to tell KD what he needed to hear.

Reach between your legs Oklahoman, grab those two tiny balls of yours and own up to your headline, you might've just saved the Thunder's season. Feel free to make a "Fuck Michael Wilbon" headline anytime you want, I for one, will not be expecting an apology.
